The following are known issues with iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS devices with iPhone 3.x software within the MIT environment.
- AT&T is the only carrier authorized for the iPhone. AT&T voice and data coverage are poor or unavailable on many parts of the MIT campus. If considering an iPhone, confirm that AT&T’s voice and data-network coverage are sufficient in the areas around MIT where the iPhone is likely to be used. AT&T’s customer service for MIT accounts is poor.
- The battery life on the iPhone 3G is poor relative to many other comparable mobile devices.
- No removable battery; the battery replacement process can be costly and time-consuming.
- The iPhone does not always indicate the availability of Wi-Fi, EDGE, or 3G networks correctly.
- The iPhone cannot store or save Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or PDF documents, and the ability to view them is limited. Documents sent as email attachments can be viewed, but they cannot be edited. Although applications are available from the iPhone App Store to manage MS Office documents, these applications are not supported by IS&T.
- TechTime Calendar synchronization is difficult, unreliable, and not recommended. However, iPhone users can access the web version of the TechTime calendar with personal certificates.
- Although you can synchronize the iPhone with multiple computers, Apple reccomends that, for consistency, you use only one computer for synchronizing.
- No Flash support for Safari.
- AT&T, currently the only carrier authorized for iPhone, does not support dial-up networking or use of the device as a modem.
- Even though Apple continues to update software on the iPhone, resolving some known issues, the details are not made public until the actual update is available.
- For those conducting international travel, data-roaming costs can be expensive.
